Bed size buying guide: How to find the right bed in 2024

It is not for nothing that there is a saying that says: How you make your bed is how you sleep. This makes choosing the right bed even more important. But finding the right bed is not that easy and depends on many factors. The size of the room, how much space you need and whether you sleep alone or as a couple?

Depending on your answers, we have selected the right bed sizes for you. From children’s and baby beds to king-size beds. After all, we spend a third of our lives in bed. Have fun with our dreamy guide.

The answer to the question “Which bed size is right?” depends on many different factors. We have therefore put together a practical overview of the most common bed sizes and types:

The choice of bed size must be age-appropriate. This is particularly relevant for babies, children and young people. Because they need a bed that is tailored to their age group and their needs. The baby bed should offer enough space and not be too short or too narrow after only a short time.

bed size
  • Baby and toddler age (up to approx. 3 years): At this age, bed sizes of 60 x 120 and 70 x 140 cm have become established. These beds take up hardly any space and can often be positioned directly next to the parents’ bed.
  • Children from 3 to 10 years: Beds measuring 70 x 160 cm are optimal here . They offer the little ones enough space to sleep and can be perfectly integrated into the children’s room.
  • Children aged 10 and over: In most cases, an adult bed measuring 200 x 90 cm is advisable for children of this age. This way you can be sure that you don’t always have to upgrade with further growth spurts and you give the children enough freedom of movement when sleeping.

Single beds are perfect for those who sleep alone and are the classic among beds.

  • Size: For a single bed, the minimum size should be 90 centimeters and the width should ideally be 1.40 meters.
  • Suitable for: This type of bed is ideal for singles or couples who want to sleep separately. They are also often used in guest rooms or teenagers’ rooms.
  • Recommended room size: The nice thing about single beds: They take up little space and are a top choice even in smaller rooms of around 10 square meters. They are also ideal for shared apartments.

If you share your home with a partner, a double bed is particularly advantageous. With a separate slatted frame and your own mattress, your individual sleeping preferences are taken into account without compromise.

  • Size: While singles sleep well on the standard size of 90 x 200 cm, a double bed with a standard sleeping area of 180 x 200 cm offers couples the greatest possible sleeping comfort.
  • Suitable for: A double bed can be used with two individual mattresses and slatted frames as well as with continuous versions. This means that a double bed is a good choice for sleepers with a similar mentality, but also for those with completely different sleeping habits.
  • Recommended room size: In order not to take away from the airiness of the room and to easily reach the bed, the bedroom should have a size of around 16 square meters or more. Where exactly you position the bed depends on the floor plan. The only important thing is that you don’t place it too close to cupboards and walls.

You often get to know the queen size bed on vacation or while traveling. In a hotel, the type of bed in the room is often specified. When many people hear the word, they immediately think of a royal bed. Even though sleeping in it can be like royalty, the English terms queen and king size only refer to the bed sizes. Narrower double beds are usually referred to as queen size and larger ones as king size.

  • Size: Queen size beds in the USA measure 60 x 80 inches. Converted, this results in a size of 152 x 203 centimeters. Since there is no such crooked information in UAE, queen-size beds in this country is 160 x 200 cm.
  • Suitable for: Due to their size, queen size beds work very well in single households as well as smaller couples’ apartments. They also offer great comfort in the guest room.
  • Recommended room size: The nice thing about queen size beds – they don’t take up too much space, but still offer enough lying space. This type of bed is therefore also an advantage for medium-sized bedrooms (from approx. 12 square meters).

While king size beds in America are traditionally constructed like a box spring bed, in this country it doesn’t matter. No matter whether with or without a headboard, a comfortable upholstered bed or a classic bed frame – the size is crucial. This is also very clearly defined in America, in contrast to our king size beds in UAE.

Reading tip: In our box spring bed guide you will find out everything you need to know about the topic!

  • Size: The European king size beds start at a size of 180 x 200 cm. However, there are no limits to the length and width of the bed.
  • Suitable for: A king size bed is a particularly large double bed that offers enough space for two people and is also suitable for taller people.
  • Recommended room size: Since the bed should ideally be accessible from at least two sides, a king size bed also requires a certain room size. They particularly look great in airy bedrooms.

For people over 185 cm tall, extra-long beds are absolutely advisable. A rule of thumb is that for adults there should be around 25 cm of wiggle room on the bed. This means that standard beds with a length of 200 cm are simply too short for many tall people and severely restrict freedom of movement. Especially if you like to lift your arms up while sleeping or stretch them out under the pillow, an extra-long bed is more comfortable than the standard size.

  • Space conditions: If there is a lack of space, some beds with, for example, particularly high headboards or a very wide frame can be directly excluded. The focus should be on smaller beds, such as futon beds.
  • Bed type: Especially in smaller, darker bedrooms, a light and delicate design for a bed would be the best visual solution, while box spring beds appear very solid and bulky – but offer greater sleeping comfort.
  • Bed height: Beds that are too low can have a negative impact on your health. Ideally, your feet should touch the floor when sitting, but not so much that your knees bend too much.

Don’t skip on the quality of your bed and find out about the type of bed you choose – because did you know that you spend a third of your life in bed?

If you are about to buy a new bed, there are a few questions you should ask yourself in advance. For example, what type of bed should it be and where should it be located in the room? We have answered five important questions for you so that you can ultimately enjoy your new bed 100 percent.

The right mattress is a prerequisite for healthy sleep. Should it be soft or hard? Which material is the right one? Nothing beats competent advice in a specialist shop and a test session on site. So that you can quickly find the model that suits you, ask yourself which sleeping position (side, stomach, back) you prefer. It also depends on whether you sweat or feel cold easily and whether a special cover is necessary due to an allergy.

Solid wooden beds are still the classic. They are timelessly beautiful and suit every living style. Box spring beds have also become increasingly popular in recent years. With their raised lying surface, they offer a high level of comfort and look chic and elegant. But metal beds with a curved, romantic frame, classic upholstered beds or minimalist futon beds are also trendy. Waterbeds are somewhat more extravagant and rare.

The place where your bed is will have an impact on your sleeping behavior and therefore directly on how comfortable you feel in that room. So take a good look at the room and ask yourself how you would like to wake up. In general, it is advisable not to align the head or foot end directly with the door. Depending on how your bedroom is designed, the required bed size will also vary.

If you and your partner buy a bed together, you should think carefully beforehand about your individual sleeping habits. If you or your partner are someone who often dreams of endless space and wants to live it out, this should be taken into account when choosing the size of the bed.

If there is very little space for a wardrobe or other floor space in the bedroom, buying a functional bed with drawers or a bed box is an ideal solution. The space under the lying surface is used efficiently. You should definitely consider whether you need storage space before buying a bed, as retrofitting with separately purchased bed boxes is not always possible.
