Renovating your living room: Best tips and ideas for a new spatial effect in 4 steps

Your own home is our personal oasis of well-being and a haven of calm in stressful times. This is where you spend most of your time and recharge your batteries for everyday life. Therefore, the ambience in your home should definitely match your individual taste and ensure comfort. If the old wallpaper has yellowed or the furniture no longer appeals to you after a few years, then it’s high time to give the living room a new coat of paint. Our interior experts will give you tips and ideas on how you can renovate your living room and give the room a homely feel. Get inspired!

Before you start designing the living room, you should plan the individual steps of the renovation carefully . This not only gives you a better overview, but your DIY project also progresses faster and much more easily.

1. Make a plan

  • Write down the steps you want to take when designing your living room. Here are some examples:
  • Remove wallpaper
  • Dismantle lights
  • Remove sockets and light switches
  • Roll up carpets and move them out of the living room
  • Plaster holes and cracks in the walls
  • Level the floor with screed
  • Sand and paint windows
  • Paint the ceiling
  • Attach wallpaper
  • paint walls
  • Sand and lay the floor
  • Attach baseboards
  • Install lights
  • Redecorate the living room

2. Crap out

Renovating the living room is the perfect way to finally get rid of unwanted baggage. So take advantage of clearing out dressers etc. and sort out everything that is no longer needed. Many items can be sold at flea markets or various online platforms for a small donation.

3. Get help

You don’t have to renovate your four walls yourself. Grab a few helping hands and do the redesign together. It’s much more fun with your loved ones anyway!

4. Get all the materials

To ensure that the renovation can begin on time, you should get all the materials you need in advance. This will save you a lot of stress down the road.

Walls and ceilings can be designed in a particularly varied way in the living room. Both painting and wallpapering have various advantages and disadvantages :

Wallpapering: pattern, color or would you rather have a structure? Wallpapers are a dime a dozen and you can also decorate your walls with the strips just as individually. The amount of work here is limited. Only the material can possibly tear a small hole in your wallet.

Painting: Painting walls and ceilings is easy and can be done really quickly in your own four walls. For a trendy effect, the walls in the living room can be finished with liquid rough or textured plaster. Painting with the wiping technique also looks very pretty. If you want to set an accent in the room with the wall color, you can paint just one wall and cover the rest with wallpaper.

If you also decided to redesign the floor when renovating the living room , you first have to choose a suitable floor covering:

  • Tiles : Tiles are particularly easy to clean and are therefore mainly found in the bathroom and kitchen. In the living room, tiles appear rather cool and sterile.
  • Parquet: Parquet is very suitable for allergy sufferers and is particularly visually appealing. In the living room, the wooden floor provides warmth and coziness, but is correspondingly expensive.
  • Laminate : Laminate is very diverse, has many designs and is cheaper than parquet, for example. Make sure that the material is designed for “high” stress.
  • PVC : PVC is also available in numerous looks and can even be combined with underfloor heating.
  • Cork : Cork scores with very good thermal insulation and high durability. This makes the floor ideal for the living room – but this is probably also because cork is easy to clean.
  • Carpet : Carpet is cozy, warm and instantly adds a cozy touch to the living room. Although high-quality carpets are easy to handle, this floor covering is generally not suitable for allergy sufferers.

The floor elements need approx. 48 hours to acclimatise. Store the closed packages horizontally in the room where the floor is to be laid for at least 48 hours. This allows the element to adapt to room conditions such as humidity and temperature.

Depending on the surface, either a subfloor or a PE film should be laid so that no moisture gets into the floor elements. Without a surface: Unevenness of more than 3 millimeters should be leveled out beforehand.

Important, because the wooden support panels can expand or become smaller depending on the room climate: Always pay attention to the correct distance from the wall! The rule of thumb is: you should keep a distance of 1.5 millimeters per meter. If you lay 8 meters of flooring, you should ensure a distance of at least 12 millimeters from the wall!

Important when laying: The ends of the individual elements must be offset.

For an even appearance of your floor

Measure the width of the room across the direction of laying and determine how wide the first and last row of boards need to be cut. The last element is cut to length and the next row is started with the remaining piece (at least 15-20 centimeters long – 15cm for Click-Tex and 20cm for vinyl and laminate).

Remove all of the longitudinal springs from the first row and carefully cut the elements to size.

When laying, always start in the left corner of the room. Push the first plank in front of the first row, tilt it slightly diagonally (15-25°) to the locking point, and the plank clicks into place when lowered. Continue like this, floor by floor. You can push the planks together with the help of a tapping block.

As soon as the walls, ceiling and floor shine in a new shine, it’s time for the most beautiful part of renovating: furnishing the living room . If you would like to upgrade your home with new furniture, consider these tips:

1. Tip: When setting up the seating area, make sure that everyone sitting is facing each other. For a cozy evening watching TV, it is ideal to choose a corner sofa and several armchairs.

2.Tip: Design your living room individually by consciously incorporating style breaks and showcasing special pieces of furniture as key pieces.

3.Tip: For a harmonious look, decorative objects should always be put together in groups of at least three accessories .

4.Tip: Don’t just use the lighting as a practical light source , but also divide the living room into different areas using lights.

5.Tip : In addition to conscious breaks in style, you can also furnish your living room in a special style . Extremely popular are an elegant look with a velvet sofa and golden accessories, as well as casual boho chic with lots of natural materials and graphic patterns. Or how about a minimalist style living room? Bright colors, high-quality it-pieces and a reduction to the essentials also make a simple living room appear warm and cozy.
