Wall Decoration: Renovation with 10 best tips and ideas for your four walls

Would you like to change the look of your home and give it a new shine? Then a renovation is definitely the right project for you. With the right ideas, tips and instructions, you can freshen up your home with little effort and without having to incur any expenses. You can now find out which requirements you have to consider, which tasks you should definitely consult a professional for and much more in our little “wall decoration guide”. We hope you enjoy reading!

Would you rather renovate, renovate or modernize your house? Often these terms are used interchangeably in everyday language. We therefore offer you a brief overview of how these terms are defined.

Renovieren is a German verb and, according to the dictionary, means something like beautify or renew. The focus of a renovation is clearly on visual improvement. Defects that arise from daily use should be corrected. A renovation therefore primarily includes cosmetic repairs: the work is not necessarily necessary, but it improves the feeling of living. As a homeowner, you can do many renovation work yourself and don’t necessarily have to hire a craftsman to do it.

Typical examples of renovation work include:

  • Wallpaper walls
  • Repaint the facade
  • Renew flooring
  • Wall decoration

Renovation means the structural and technical restoration of a building. This involves redesigning your home and adapting it to new needs through a renovation or partial demolition and new construction. Unlike a renovation, the reason for a renovation is always a serious defect . When renovating, you definitely need additional external help from professionals. The work is often complex and requires specialist knowledge, experience and special tools.

Typical examples of renovation measures are:

  • Mold removal
  • Drain the basement
  • Repair a leaky roof

However, you can also undertake modernization yourself. Here you replace the outdated equipment with a new, contemporary look. Such a project not only increases the standard of living, but also increases the utility value of the property. Some modernization measures are even required by law – for example for fire protection.

Typical examples of modernization measures are:

  • Insulate roof or exterior walls
  • Insert insulating glass windows
  • Buy modern heating

While homeowners can design their living space as much as they want, as a renter you are often at a loss. You can find the answers to the most frequently asked questions here.

Is renovating mandatory during the rental period and when moving out ?

You may be obliged to renovate in the rental agreement. This only applies to cosmetic repairs. Without such an agreement, the renovation obligation lies solely with the landlord.

Are the deadlines to be observed for renovation ?

If renovation deadlines are set in the rental agreement, you only have to stick to them if the need for renovation is determined after the deadline has expired. The same applies to renovations when moving out of the rental apartment.

What happens if tenants do not renovate?

If a tenant does not fulfill his obligation to renovate, the landlord can assert claims for damages. If in doubt, you should seek advice from a tenants association regarding the obligation. If you feel that your tenancy rights have been violated or if you consider the conditions in the tenancy agreement to be unclear, it is best to contact your landlord. If in doubt, you can also follow the current tenancy law rulings.

Before you swing the hammer, you should first draw up a plan for your renovation or modernization. Think about the different goals you want to achieve in each room. You can then write down step by step what work needs to be done. This way you always have an overview of all the tasks that still lie ahead.

You should ask yourself these questions before your project: First, think about which rooms need renovation or which you would like to change. Is it just a wall or the old floor or even the entire room? Does it make sense to consider energy-saving measures such as thermal insulation?

You should also set a clear financial budget before the renovation work and divide it into the individual tasks. For example, it might be worth hiring the same tradesman for some jobs – this not only saves time, but also renovation costs.

Above all, note the budget available. This is where the entire renovation project stands or falls. If you want to redesign a few areas or have the necessary change aside, a professional can take on the work. In some cases, such as required sealing and renovation measures, this is essential. If you enjoy DIY, have a limited budget or are planning purely decorative projects, renovate yourself.

Now it’s time to get down to business! Your modernization is just around the corner and you don’t know where to start? We will give you a brief overview of all the tasks that arise in most projects.

1. Walls

Let’s start with the walls first. Before you start designing, you should first create an even foundation . The following tasks are particularly popular:

  • Plaster walls
  • Wallpaper the wall
  • Cancel

The material – what you need for the wall :

The right material is essential to successfully renovate a house or apartment. When painting, think about how large the area you want to paint is. If you also have to paint the ceiling, this requires additional material. For the walls you will need large rollers and small brushes for the corners, for the ceiling you will need a telescopic rod and a stable ladder. Cover film protects your floors and adhesive tape switches and connections that are firmly embedded in the wall.

Preparation for working:

Before you start painting, carefully cover your floors with masking film or newspaper. If possible, move your furniture to another room, otherwise protect it with foil. Make sure you have enough paint or tiles and associated materials on hand. Whether you’re painting or laying a floor – prepare the surface! Remove any dirt or loose material and level out any unevenness.

2. Floor and stairs

Laying a new floor usually also means getting rid of the old one. If the old living room carpet needs to be replaced, you first have to remove it completely instead of simply covering it with a new layer of covering. Then think about which flooring is best for your home:

  • Textile floor coverings (carpet)
  • Wooden floor coverings
  • floor tiles

The material – what you need for the floor:

If you want to renovate your floors, find out more about floor coverings. For tiles, take their abrasion class into account. In the bathroom and living room, tiles are exposed to less stress than, for example, in the garage. To lay new tiles, the floor must be leveled with a floor leveling compound; any unevenness will be noticeable, especially with large tiles. Tile adhesive, grouting agents and calculated edge tiles should not be missing from your shopping list.

Tips for a successful floor renovation :

When tiling, you apply tile adhesive and lay the tiles parallel or diagonally. Then glue and grout them with grout. In both cases: give the result enough time to dry.

3. Kitchen & Bathroom

The particular focus of renovation work is usually on the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure you choose timeless fittings and bathroom furniture that you will still like in a few years. Additionally, choose high-quality furniture. This will save you additional renovation costs in the coming years. After all, you spend a lot of time in these two rooms. They also have to withstand more extreme requirements than is the case in other rooms.

Our Interior Design Service by TUKA Collection will be happy to help you renovate your four walls! Whether it’s a house, individual areas or an apartment: you can easily book the service online and we’ll get back to you with a personal phone call!

An old building always exudes a special atmosphere. It’s no wonder that many people prefer to renovate an older home rather than build a new one. But this decision should also be carefully considered. Such renovations often cost almost as much as building a new property .

Before modernizing a building, you should first get a detailed overview of all the work that needs to be done and at the same time estimate the time and price value. Old buildings are often definitely worth this effort.

In an old building, the hallway is usually particularly large and magnificent – you can also get all the tips on renovating hallways from us!

Before you start your own project, we’ll give you our top 10 tips for a renovation along the way. We wish you lots of fun and success!

1. Tip: Check the surface

Check the surface: Before painting the wall or floor, always make sure the surface is even.

2nd tip: tiling

Always start tiling in the corner and determine the edge overhang with a piece of tile scrap.

3rd tip: stick wallpaper with light

Always wallpaper ceilings with the incidence of light. This means that the seams run towards the light and cannot form any mini-shadows.

4th tip: steel wool

Use steel wool to remove scratches from painted surfaces.

5. Tip: Calculate the amount of paint

This way you can always be sure that you will have enough color for the entire area.

6. Tip: Buy quality

Pay attention to the quality of silicone. This means the seal lasts a lot longer.

7. Tip: Cut carpets cleverly

Cutting carpet becomes much easier with a so-called easy-cut knife .

8. Tip: Store brushes

Used brushes can be stored overnight in a mason jar filled with water.

9. Tip: Paint correctly

For an even surface, spray your paint first vertically, then horizontally.

10. Tip: Spray

A moisture protection spray prevents mold and moisture on untiled walls in the kitchen and bathroom.
